Submarines Song Used in Nip/Tuck Finale

    Tue, 19 Dec 2006 15:27:55

THE SUBMARINES FEATURED IN THE SEASON FINALE OF FX DRAMA NIP/TUCK

The song "Brighter Discontent" by the Los Angeles-based Nettwerk recording artist The Submarines was featured in the much-anticipated season finale of the FX hit series nip/tuck on Tuesday, December 12 at 10 PM ET/PT. Instead of dialogue, the cast lip-synced the entire 4-minute, 30-second song, as the lyrics strongly reflect what their characters are experiencing.

Lip-syncing cast members included Dylan Walsh (as "Dr. Sean McNamara"), Julian McMahon (as "Dr. Christian Troy"), John Hensley (as "Matt McNamara"), Roma Maffia (as "Dr. Liz Cruz"), Kelly Carlson (as "Kimber Henry") and Sanaa Lathan (as "Michelle Landau").

nip/tuck creator Ryan Murphy discovered the band and "Brighter Discontent" while listening to National Public Radio on KCRW in Los Angeles as he drove to his office last September. The episode, which was co-written and directed by Murphy, also featured two other Submarines' songs less prominently: "The Good Night" and "Modern Inventions."

"We're thrilled and honored to be part of the nip/tuck finale and in such a dramatic way, "comments Blake Hazard of The Submarines. "I can't wait to watch this climactic moment in a great show, and to have our song be so involved in it! We made this album in such a DIY way, through a very intimate and 'home-made' sort of process, it'll be really exciting to see the song translated into another emotional atmosphere."

The Submarines - Blake Hazard and John Dragonetti - released their debut album Declare A New State earlier this year on Nettwerk Records. A sonically exhilarating parallel journey of two songwriters going through the same heartbreaking experience, Declare A New State resulted from Hazard and Dragonetti's break-up. Their split triggered a prolific period of songwriting and recording for both-and the process eventually brought them back to each other again.

Declare A New State can be streamed in its entirety at the band's website (http://www.thesubmarines.com). Following the release of the album, The Subs recorded an iTunes session with famed indie rock producer Adam Lassus (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Yo La Tengo), available now on iTunes. Also, the band recently completed "The Submarines Remix Project," where they collaborated with artists like Styrofoam (collaborator with Death Cab's Ben Gibbard and American Analog Set's Andrew Kenny), Nobody (remixer of the Postal Service), Console of the Notwist, Morgan Page (Coldplay, Imogen Heep) and Dutch indie rocker Solex to put new spins on their originals. The remixes can be found on most digital service providers.

The Submarines will be doing a residency at The Echo -- a club in Los Angeles -- through January of next year and will perform each Monday night at 10:00 PM free of charge. Inaugural trips to Japan, the UK and other parts of Europe will follow.

Set in Miami, nip/tuck follows the lives of "Dr. Sean McNamara" and "Dr. Christian Troy" two plastic surgeons and business partners who run McNamara/Troy, a South Beach plastic surgery practice. The season four premiere was the largest 18-49 audience of any season premiere of an original basic cable series in 2006. nip/tuck is produced by The Shephard/Robin Company in association with Warner Bros. Television.

    BRIGHTER DISCONTENT

got a brand new roof above my head
all the empty boxes thrown away
i rearranged the place a hundred times today
but the ordering of objects couldn't hide what's missing

all these things should make me happy
make me happy to be home again
all these things should make me happy
make me happy to be alone again

got myself a bottle of red wine
got a night of nothing else to do
i think i might know what i really want
but is a brighter discontent the best that i could hope to find?

got a big black television set
now i can watch just what i want
but i'm here staring up at pictures on the wall
and where are you, you're still stuck inside them all

all these things should make me happy
make me happy to be home again
all these things should make me happy
make me happy to be alone again

love is not these belongings that surround me
though there's meaning in the memories they hold
a breaking heart in an empty apartment
was the loudest sound i never heard

got a desk i'll write myself a note
pretending that it came from you
on hotel stationary from the time we first met
whatever i can do cause i wonÂ't throw my hands up yet

all these things should make me happy
make me happy to be home again
all these things should make me happy
make me happy to be alone again

love is not these belongings that surround me
though there's meaning in the memories they hold
a breaking heart in an empty apartment
was the loudest sound i never heard

well i'll be fine if i don't look around me now
    too much for what's gone
if only i can stay here just a little while -- and let
    time pass in my room
