Jason Schwartzman has been cast as the lead character in the upcoming HBO pilot Bored to Death.
Schwartzman, the son of Talia Shire and a member of the famed Coppola dynasty, has had a steady film career in recent years, including a star-making turn in Rushmore and a role in cousin Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette. On Bored... he will play a Brooklyn-based writer with a drinking problem. After he splits with his girlfriend, he begins a duplicitous lifestyle, assuming the identities of characters in books he loves by Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett.
Production on the series is slated for September in New York. Schwartzman will begin work on Judd Apatow's Funny People that same month.
