    Child in Me, Vol. 1

    01/01/2001 | Harbinger

    All Music Guide Review

Jamie deRoy is a multi-talented individual having successfully worked as comedienne, TV talk show host, producer, actress, and cabaret singer. Now she has come up with the novel idea of selecting songs which celebrate childhood, hers and others', and inviting more than a dozen cabaret singers to join her in recording them. The title of her album is also the title of deRoy's weekly TV show broadcast in N.Y.C. The liner notes include a childhood picture of each performer as well as a vignette from that time of his/her life. Some tunes are better known than others. Portia Nelson's "Make a Rainbow" gained notoriety after it was performed at President Clinton's inauguration. Here it's sung by cabaret, stage, and TV performer Deborah Tranelli. Kathie Lee Gifford appears to sing the title tune. All of the material is simple, sweet, sunny, and sincere, befitting an album which is an accolade to that part of one's life that should be unaffected by cares and worries. The closest thing to a dark cloud is "Sailin' On," a track by Laurie Beechman, who played Grizabella in Cats for four years and who passed away in 1999. This album moves one to sit back and recall happy special childhood times. Since this set is subtitled Vol. 1, that presumes there's more to come. ~ Dave Nathan, All Music Guide
