In 2000, Philippine independent label Viva Records released Kailangan Ko'y Ikaw (I Needed You), the soundtrack to the local movie of the same name. The recording cast is headed by Regine Velasquez, one of the Philippines' most popular singers. She also starred in the movie, along with Robin Padilla, a male actor who duets with Velasquez here. Also performing are Cacai Velasquez, the sister of Regine; Ely Buendia, member of popular Philippine rock group Eraserheads; Raul Mitra; and Gabby Eigenmann. The album is dominated by easy listening and middle-of-the-road material, which are very popular styles in the Philippines. "Kailangan Ko'y Ikaw" (I Needed You) is the film's theme song and is a pleasant middle-of-the-road number sung by Velasquez, who instills much passion. "The First Time I Saw Your Face" is a Velasquez remake of the original song performed by Roberta Flack. This version is slowed down from the already slow original, and has a weak, fragile feel, sounding as though it will fall apart at any time. This isn't a very good remake. "The Best That I Can Be" features smooth balladeering by Eigenmann in the manner of James Ingram and Jeffrey Osborne. The album's best song is "Sabihin Mo Lang" (Just Say It), composed by Trina Belamide. The song is intelligent and penetrating, and features a dramatic, minor-key chorus sung with much passion and grace by Velasquez. Another Belamide composition, the spirited "Kaligayahan" (Happiness), is also a fine song. ~ David Gonzales, All Music Guide
