In support of 2001's Ladyfest East (a "nonprofit, East Coast-based event dedicated to supporting and promoting the artistic talents and activism of women" held in New York City on September 6-9), the Brooklyn-based 28 Days record label has issued a double-disc release featuring 29 acts. Most of the artists included on the Ladyfest East compilation probably won't sound familiar to many listeners -- the truly excellent Hissyfits and Crowns on 45 are the biggest names -- but the musicians are so great that their relative obscurity makes discovering them all the more exciting. Almost every one of the first disc's tracks fall into the upbeat, pep-punky category -- Moxiestarpark, Scrapple, and the Operators are among the numerous notables -- whereas the second disc is generally more sonically diverse (Floor, Redhot Secret, Gina Young). Rarely are compilations this consistently enjoyable and noteworthy, however, and with liner notes featuring website information for each act, Ladyfest East is an excellent way to get acquainted with some extremely talented female performers. ~ Jimmy Draper, All Music Guide
