The East Coast genre known as beach music is one of those I-know-it-when-I-hear-it concepts, and while it might be loosely defined as a mixture of soul, pop, and funk, it really is whatever will get people out on the dancefloor, and that includes the slow stuff, the huge romantic ballads that put couples in each other's arms. This set, the second in Ripete Records' Ebb Tide series, focuses on those slow swaying love songs, and includes undisputed classics like Little Anthony & the Imperials' "Goin' Out of My Head," Percy Sledge's powerful "(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right," Etta James' patience payoff "At Last," the Platters' "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," Brook Benton's "Rainy Night in Georgia," and the Tymes' immortal "So Much in Love." The end result is a moving symphony of love and devotion best heard with the lights turned down low. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
