Whether or not he was "the greatest voice of the 20th Century," as Arturo Toscannini dubbed him (in the matter of influence over volume, some might award that honor to Louis Armstrong), there's no denying Mario Lanza's incredibly powerful tenor, and even working in Hollywood couldn't take that away from him. This 22-track set of early mono recordings cut between 1949 and 1952 contains Lanza's two most important pop entries, "Be My Love" and "Because," and makes an adequate introduction to what was a rather brief recording career cut short by Lanza's death in 1959. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
