At only 12 tracks, this brief sampler of mostly roots reggae can only hint at the full sweep of the genre, and while it features a handful of undeniable classics like Burning Spear's "Marcus Garvey," Jimmy Cliff's "Many Rivers to Cross" (which really isn't reggae, although it is a gorgeous song), and Junior Murvin's "Police and Thieves" (one of Lee "Scratch" Perry's finest productions), there are dozens of single-disc compilations of reggae on the market that do a better job. Not that this one is bad; it just doesn't sweep deep enough or last long enough. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
