This CD pays a heartfelt tribute to Jackie Robinson, the African-American baseball star who broke the major league color barrier when he signed on with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Choice selections include Sly & the Family Stone's "Stand!", Billy Paul's "Brown Baby", poetess Nikki Giovanni's "Stealing Home for Jackie Robinson" and Luther Vandross singing the trumpeting "Ain't No Stopping Us Now". Collectively, these songs celebrate the long struggle for racial equality, and the pride of the African-American community. The 13 tracks represent a soul music smorgasbord incorporating hip-hop, spoken word, urban, and rap, and the result is an uplifting tribute to the emotional power of music in times of trouble as well as triumph. ~ Andrew Hamilton, All Music Guide
