All Music Guide Review

This 1998 vinyl collection is the definitive compilation of classic second period Wailers material, all dating from their 1965-1967 incarnation, recording for their own Etiquette label while producing the other act on the label, the Sonics. Taking a cue from the younger Sonics, this period finds the Wailers toughening up their sound and approach, sounding much grittier and less R&B-ish after the departure of guitarist Rich Dangel. By now, the Northwest group had coalesced from a 'riff'n'rhythm' instrumental band to an R&B show band with singers to a self-contained unit trying to swim against the tide of British rock'n'roll. Northwest legend Rockin' Robin Roberts' last single is here, "You Weren't Using Your Head," and along with hot album tracks from Out of Our Tree, Wailers Wailers Everywhere, various Etiquette singles too fine to ignore, two different versions of "Hang Up," and an unissued demo acetate featuring the previously unheard "I Got Me" and the title track. Not everything the band cut during their later period was solid gold, but the very best of it is right here. ~ Cub Koda, All Music Guide
