Regine Velasquez

In 1995, Regine Velasquez released My Love Emotion, which followed the commercially successful, Listen Without Prejudice, which reached platinum and gold in a number of Asian countries. If anything, My Love Emotion is an even better album than Listen Without Prejudice. The title track, "My Love Emotion," is a triumph: Velasquez's singing is strong, emotive and confident. The tune itself, composed by one Phil Buckle, is an outstanding vehicle, containing a strong melody and hook in the chorus.

Throughout My Love Emotion, Velasquez sings in a comfortable register instead of aiming for a higher register, as she did all too often on her previous album, which made her voice sound thin and unappealing at times. Another highlight is the jazz-styled, "Perfect - Regine with the Tux," which features a backing quartet performing an exciting, jazz scatting vocal accompaniment to Velasquez's fine handling of the melody. There is no instrumentation on the song, and none is needed: "Perfect - Regine with the Tux" swings mightily indeed.

Passionate, easy-listening love songs, a style of music quite popular in the Philippines, have played a large role on Velasquez's albums, and though she doesn't abandon it entirely here, My Love Emotion is more modern and contemporary in tone throughout.

My Love Emotion sold extremely well in the Philippines. According to the label, overseas Asian sales did not come close to matching figures reached by her previous album, Listen Without Prejudice, which featured a duet with Asian superstar Jacky Cheung.
