Maybe you don't think of South Africa as the first place to turn for genre-hopping rural/industrial dance music. Surprise! This delightful compilation finds Ladysmith Black Mambazo getting funked up drum-and-bass style by local beatmongers RSL, brings Egyptian Nursery's "Learning to Be Healed" (a chart hit in both South Africa and France) to a broader listenership, and introduces the ethereal sound of Tananas (in a chugging house remix) to American ears as well. The collection also includes Dubious 101, whose "Stable Riot" (presented here in its "Flaring Nostril Remix") sounds like a cross between desert winds and a double-time robot march, and Sugardrive, whose "Girl You Made Me Bad" offers a reggae bassline that struts beneath mellifluous trombone while a clattery drum-and-bass rhythm lurks in the distance. And try to ignore the vocals on that last one. This album is perfect for your next multicultural dance party. ~ Rick Anderson, All Music Guide
