Born in Luttrell, Tennessee, he developed a distinctive fingerstyle technique—often called the “Nashville sound” or “Travis picking”—that combined bass lines, melody, and rhythm simultaneously on the guitar. His playing is characterized by precision, smooth tone, and musical sophistication, bridging country, jazz, and pop influences.

Atkins rose to prominence in the 1940s and 1950s as a session musician and recording artist, eventually becoming a key architect of the Nashville sound.
