His nickname “Munky” originated from his energetic playing style and unique approach to the guitar.

As one of Korn’s primary guitarists, alongside Brian , Shaffer helped develop the band’s signature sonic identity, characterized by dissonant chord structures, rhythmic emphasis, and innovative use of effects. This approach contributed to the emergence of nu metal in the 1990s, influencing a wide range of artists within the genre.

Shaffer has contributed to all of Korn’s major releases, including their self-titled debut Korn (album) (1994) and subsequent albums like Follow the Leader (1998).
